Dr. Ross has visited Shanghai Mental Health Center five times and has a sixth visit scheduled to do a two-day training in Trauma Model Therapy on October 29-30, 2009. His primary collaborators on this project are Dr. Benjamin B. Keyes of Regent University in the United States, and Dr. Zeping Xiao at Shanghai Mental Health Center.

The research collaboration has so far resulted in the following publications:

Childhood Physical and Sexual Abuse in China
Ross, C.A., Keyes, B.B., Xiao, Z., Yan, H.Q., Wang, Z., Zou, Z., Xu, Y., Chen, J., Zhang, H.:
Journal of Child Sexual Abuse, 14, 4, 115-126, 2005.

Teaching Chinese Psychiatrists to Make Reliable Dissociative Disorder Diagnoses
Qing Fan, Junhan Yu, Ross, C.A., Keyes, B.B., Dai, Y., Zhang, T., Wang, L., Xiao, Z.:
Transcultural Psychiatry, in press.

In addition to these papers, several others are under review at English-language journals and several have been published in Chinese. The research published to date has demonstrated that dissociative disorders can be diagnosed in China, and Chinese clinicians can be trained diagnose them with good reliability. Dissociation is linked to trauma in China as it is elsewhere in the world.

Future research in the planning stage involves a large-scale, prospective, randomized trial of Trauma Model Therapy for trauma, dissociation and complex comorbidity, to be conducted by the team at Shanghai Mental Health Center (SMHC). Measures under consideration for the study have been used in past and current research projects at SMHC. They include, besides symptom and diagnostic measures: MRI scans of the amygdala and hippocampus, EEGs, blood levels of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) and analysis of a single nucleotide polymorphism for the BDNF gene.

If this research is funded and completed, it will provide a scientific test of the core predictions of Dr. Ross' Trauma Model.
